In a few weeks’ time I will be heading down to the basement where we keep our analysts and, after the usual formalities have been addressed (I will perform the strange haka-like dance that they insist upon as a greeting and I usually give them a bucket of fish-heads for a festive treat), asking them to name the trusts they think will perform best in 2025.

A quick glance at the runners and riders from last year’s ‘top picks’ article – which we’ll be talking about in more detail in our 23rd December issue – shows what a banger of a year this has been for those brave enough to have piled into equities twelve months ago.

In previous years however a common theme has been that at least one of us picks a trust that goes spectacularly splat about six months later, to the resounding scorn and hilarity of our most loyal readers.

Many of you have taken the time to send us your constructive criticism of our choices over the years – often crudely drawn and I am sure they aren’t supposed to be that colour, you should get that checked – and so we thought this year it would be fun to invite you to take part yourselves, putting your money where your mouth (or keyboard) is.

The best part is that you don’t actually have to part with any money at all, you just have to tell us where – theoretically – you’d put that money if you had it. If your ‘pick’ comes out on top this time next year, and assuming you are still with us (our demographic profile makes this assumption shaky at best), we’ll put your name into a hat alongside the names of any other investment geniuses who picked the same fund, and the one we pull back out will get £100 in John Lewis vouchers.

Imagine the tasteful and reassuringly well-made slippers you could buy with that.

Click on the button below to tell us which investment trust you’re backing to be the top performer – in share price terms – in calendar year 2025.
