What interventionist policies should our new government pursue? In a previous article, we argued in favour of a British ISA, which would give greater incentives for investing tax-free allocations in UK-listed companies. What we got was a pretty weak version of such a policy, but with a new government in power with a massive majority, maybe the time will soon come for greater measures. As we discussed at the time, we don’t think all the weight should fall on the individual UK investor, but the government should lean on institutions to invest in UK-listed companies. To us, it seems the main argument against is that it would prevent the professional investor from taking a mainly passive approach to building a portfolio, and as we discuss below, we don’t think this is anything to be scared of.
