Overview

BlackRock Income & Growth Trust (LON:BRIG) is managed by Adam Avigdori and David Goldman who run a concentrated portfolio of around 40 stocks. They are bottom-up stock pickers who aim to generate alpha by picking the right companies, rather than by taking significant style bets. The managers look for good cash generation and strong balance sheets, which should add an additional layer of resilience to the companies selected. Income and growth objectives are balanced, with a view to long-term total returns.

Adam and David view existing and potential investments in three distinct categories. Around 70% of the portfolio is made up of income generators. These are businesses generating strong and sustainable free cash flows, with balanced allocations between growth and shareholder returns. Approximately 20% is allocated towards growth companies and the remainder in turnaround opportunities (see Portfolio section).

BRIG’s performance over a five-year period has been ahead of the benchmark. Its bias toward quality, value and large caps has been helped by the market’s rotation away from growth stocks (see Performance section). BRIG has strong revenue reserves that allowed the board to raise the dividend during the 2022 financial year. However, revenue returns fell back, largely as a result of bumper special dividends not being repeated (see Dividend section). BRIG pays a dividend yield of approximately 3.9% and uses a modest level of gearing, at approximately 3%, while its latest discount stands at approximately 8.4%. It has an OCF of 1.17%, higher than the sector average, which is to be expected given its small size.

Analyst's View

We think BRIG offers an attractive way to invest for the long term, with a view to sustainable returns, without taking any significant style bets and while having a good balance across portfolio exposures. Adam and David’s focus on quality companies and their cautious approach to gearing give a defensive element to the portfolio. The total return focus means that BRIG does not pay as high dividends as others in the sector, but we believe that its focus on dividend and capital growth is attractive to long-term investors. The managers have been adept and nimble at times, as demonstrated by the shifting of allocations across consumer stocks during 2022, which has helped with performance.

The managers are relatively cautious about the outlook for the UK market over the short term, believing that earnings downgrades are expected in the upcoming reporting season. These will reflect the challenging year that global economies and markets have had and the current high inflation and interest rate environment. However, over a longer time horizon, they point to the attractive valuations of UK stocks versus their international peers. This means that the UK market is, arguably, on sale.

Bull

  • Better dividend yield than the benchmark, with growth prospects
  • Quality and value positions have done well amidst the market rotation away from growth
  • Closed-ended structure allows managers to employ a dynamic and flexible approach without worrying about overall portfolio liquidity

Bull

  • Small trust size limits institutional investors and liquidity
  • Strong emphasis on ESG, but not exclusionary; contains tobacco stocks
  • Gearing can amplify downside
