Rewatch our series of webinars throughout March to hear from fund managers running money all around the world in our March event series…
We hosted a series of digital webinars at lunchtimes every weekday across four weeks in March, with each week themed around a different key investment theme.
Week one: Growth & Value strategies
Kicking off on Monday 6th we had a conversation with Paul Niven, manager of the venerable F&C Investment Trust and our own David Kimberley, who examined the connection between growth and value investing, and the purpose each strategy serves in a well balanced portfolio.
The rest of the week was split between funds which pursue these strategies, or a combination of them both, with speakers joining us from Edinburgh, London and San Francisco.
Week two: Investing for income
On Monday 13th we began a new week focused on income, talking to veteran investment trust pundit and former head of investment trust research at Winterflood Securities, Simon Elliott. Simon, who recently moved to JPMorgan where he is client director for the banking giant’s £12.5bn investment trust range, started the week off with an examination of the features which make investment trusts such an ideal vehicle for those seeking income from their portfolios.
During the rest of the week we saw four fund managers presenting their very different approaches to generating income via portfolios targeting equities, property, infrastructure and more.
Week three: Emerging markets
On Monday 20th we turned to emerging markets, starting the week with a conversation between David Kimberley and our own investment team’s chief investment officer, Ed Butchart. Ed, who joined Kepler from Sloane Robinson in January 2021, runs the KLS Corinium Emerging Markets All Weather Fund and the KLS Corinium Emerging Markets Equity Fund, and in the session expanded on the opportunity he sees in a resurgent China, and the outlook for emerging markets more broadly.
Later in the week we were joined by managers running money in China and Latin America, and zoomed in to speakers in Delhi and Saigon for deep dive into their respective countries.
Week four: Alternatives and specialist funds
In our final week we turned to specialist funds. Starting with a presentation from Waverton's Matthew Parkinson, we learned how wealth managers use specialist funds in their portfolios, before moving on to hear from a series of fund managers running highly specialised mandates.
On Tuesday Taylor Maritime Investments' Edward Buttery gave us the lowdown on the trust he runs, which has a unique focus on cargo ships. Marylebone Partners' Dan Higgins and Olivia MacDonald joined us on Wednesday to talk about their approach as the new team behind multi-asset trust Majedie Investments. Thursday saw Stephen Lilley, manager of the UK's biggest wind farm investor Greencoat UK Wind, take the stage, and our final speaker on Friday joined us from NB Private Equtiy Partners; fund manager Paul Daggett giving us an insight into the high octane world of private equity investing.
